DOES NOT COMPUTE VOTING MACHINE FAILURES

The maker of the electronic voting machines has passively admitted that its machines may not have registered or saved votes during the last election. Election officials were aghast at the revelation that the machines did not automatically save tallied votes. The company claimed that the election officials should have “audited” each machine every time it was turned on or off. Officials countered with the fact that when they turn off their computers, those hard drives don't erase the stored data.

Electronic voting machines are supposed to be a one trick pony: tabulate selections into a data base to be read by election officials. It is not supposed to be as complicated as your lap top computer running four different programs at once.

The fact that electronic voting machines were challenged for the fact that at times, the push button screens were not properly calibrated to the right candidate in registering votes, to the fact that even tallied votes would disappear on shutdown proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the machines are unreliable. In a rare instance, a machine is not worthy of tabulating information as accurately as humans.

The ballot box is a sacred institution in democratic countries. To have an impersonal machine, in secret, and subject to manipulation and error, have an impact on the governance of the liberties of free people, is an unacceptable risk. Without a clear paper trail, a check and balance on what votes were cast, the foundation of the democratic country will crack and fall.

In the end, millions of taxpayer dollars were wasted on these electronic machines. And quite possibly, the intregrity of several elections was also put into doubt.

THE NEW POOR CULTURE

It is one of those cultural things that makes an observer scratch his head.

You see a news story about a shooting in the city, in a poor neighborhood, with out of control gangs, killing innocent people. The poor community, on welfare or scrapping by on minimum wage jobs, is in grief over the endless cycle of poverty and death.

The lure of guns, drugs and quick cash is the only avenue for some young people to survive in the inner cities. It is the only business left in the neighborhood, even though it is illegal and dangerous. Normal business enterprises have fled or closed due to high crime rates and uninsurability.

But in the midst of this scene of tragic poverty, the people clinging to the streets are all seen talking on their cell phones. And their children are on their cell phones. Everyone has a cell phone.

It was reported that one in ten Americans are now on food stamps. But America has sold as many cell phones as citizens.

Cell phones are expensive. The phone costs a few hundred dollars, and the calling plans can range from $30 to $100 per month (with or without texting or other features). For a family, it is a several thousand dollar commitment each year - - - probably more than what is paid for school supplies or textbooks.

It was one of those cultural footnotes that the idea of a cell phone has become a personal right in America. Everyone has one; whether they can afford it or not.
